PMI® : Project Management Institute

Founded in 1969, the Project Management Institute PMI® (www.pmi.org) is the most recognized authority and association in the domains of Project, Program and Portfolio Management.

A non Profit professionnal organisation

At PMI, the primary goal is to advance the practice, science and profession of Project Management throughout the world in a conscientious and proactive manner so that organizations everywhere will embrace, value and utilize Project Management and then attribute their successes to it.

PMI® has over 400,000 members and credential holders worldwide.

The PMI® approach

Their collaborative approach is founded on the following concepts.

  • PMI® Membership encourages project professionals to adopt global and local best practices, to build relationships and share resources.
  • Global standards are crucial to the profession of Project Management. Standards ensure a basic Project Management framework is applied consistently worldwide for every kind of project, in any sector of industry. These standards develop a common language which in turn facilitates sharing of information. PMI® has developed 12 global standards, of which the most well known is PMBOK® Guide.
  • PMI®’s credentials help business professionals start, build or advance their careers in Project Management. PMI® has defined 5 credentials: PMP®, CAPM®, PgMP®, PMI-SP®, PMI-RMP® adapted to different project populations and needs.
  • PMI® is the only Project Management association with a dedicated research program. Since 1997, PMI has invested US $14 million in project management research and has been directly involved in the release of more than 350 publications.

PMI® has developed the Global Accreditation Centre for Project Management Education Programs (GAC). The GAC is accrediting university programs in Project Management at the graduate and undergraduate levels worldwide.
